Medicinal cannabis flower prescription is now widespread in Australia I found on a recent visit. Price is approximately 265 baht per gram in 10 gram sealed containers. Up to 30% THC content available and quality is overseen by the Australian government. Given the current overcharging by most cannabis dispensaries in Thailand, I'd could imagine there's about to be a profit grab by the growers and dispensaries in Thailand with the new legislation. I can envisage pricing around triple the price of Australian medical cannabis, despite the much lower labour and transportation costs.
How much out of pocket? How long does the prescription last? Automatic renewal? I don't see the price per gram going up in Thailand. I believe it will hold steady for well sourced truly medical between 450 and 700 baht; exception is tourist traps, but I don't see them lasting. If price goes anywhere I believe it will go down. And there are already specials during low season.
Script lasts as long as you use it essentially with a maximum of 20 grams per week allowed. Patient is allowed to start on a maximum THC level of 21% and generally prescribed 50/50 sativa/ indica at first. After first month the patient can choose from any THC content and strain. 10gram containers must be picked up personally with identification from either chemist or dispensary. When I quoted you the price per gram which is bought in 10 gram min/ max containers, I was using AUD/ Baht exchange rate from earlier this year. Price is $12 AUD per gram which actually makes it 290 baht per gram approx at today's exchange rate. Medicinal cannabis is not subsidised by the government under the PBS ( pharmaceutical benefits scheme) but the fact that the product is significantly cheaper is Australia' does perhaps demonstrate a level of greed in Thailand surrounding weed. I hope you're right on the price going down if anywhere.
Sounds well thought out and affordable. What's not to like? I would say drop the script requirement and just self-report to a licensed seller in order to obtain a card. Otherwise, sounds great. Inexpensive.
In Thailand, only a tiny fraction of sales are to Thais. The prices stay high right now because tourists see it as a novelty. There are specials in those dispensaries which are more oriented toward locals, but that means expats. Thais grow their own or buy from friends for the same price they sell to dispensaries. How would you improve the Aus regime?
I get that the tourists are willing to pay over the odds as a novelty but as an expat in Bangkok I've yet to see anything below 500 baht per gram available to me off the street.. as far as improving the Australian system, removal of the blood test that is a prerequisite before being granted a licence/prescription. The test is to see if you're already a smoker. If any traces the patient won't meet the criteria set down and can't get a script. A friend of mine there had to get his wife to get the licence as she is a non smoker.
